A.J. Newman

Drumline Instructor


A.J. hails from the small town of North Granby, CT, but currently calls Manchester home. He graduated from UConn in 2021 with a degree in Applied Resource Economics and currently works for the IT department at UConn.

A.J. has experience on a wide array of percussion instruments including marching tenors, concert percussion, and drum kit, but he is a bass drummer at heart. He has been playing the bass drum for 15 years and has played in several ensembles including the UConn athletic and symphonic bands, and the Fife and Drum Corps at UConn. He currently plays with the world-renowned Connecticut Patriots Fife and Drum Corps of Bristol, CT. Through his bass drumming career, A.J. has performed across the northeastern United States, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. On both the rope-tension and corps-style bass drum, he is passionate about pushing the art form forward and sharing the tradition with the next generation of musicians through education, outreach, and performance.
